Beccles continued their policy of the last few weeks of giving their new players a chance to show what they can do. Petch, Smith, Warnes, Chantry and Baker were all given their chance to impress either from the start or off the bench.
The match didn't start well for Beccles with a penalty from the kick off giving Southwold the lead within the first minute. Beccles were conceding a lot of penalties early on meaning Southwold were always on the front foot. Some good covering tackles by Smith and Loader snuffed out any chances they created however.
Gradually the tide began to turn and the penalty count started to even up and Beccles began to gain more territory and possession. Beccles took a number of scrums close to the Southwold line but were kept out. In the end the pressure told and captain Baldry opened the scoring for Beccles driving over the line. Gedney added the conversion.
Beccles continued to push for more points and with Southwold down to 14 men due to a sinbin they drove close to the line. Scrumhalf Loader decided to go himself and managed to squirm his way over the line for another try. This gave a half time score of 12 - 3.
Beccles started well in the second half and further increased their lead. Morton received the ball on the twenty-two. A bullocking run saw him crash through a number of tackles and go over in the corner.
Beccles then lost Maeer to the sin bin and Southwold quickly took advantage breaking out of their own half and going over for a try. That was the extent of the damage though and restored to fifteen men Beccles quickly took advantage again. It was Morton who scored again in similar fashion to his first. This time he scored under the posts and Gedney added the conversion.
There was time for one more score and Beccles on top pinned Southwold on their line. Johnstone drove off the back of a ruck and pirouetted through the tackle to score. This gave a final score of 29-8.
Man of the match was Morton.
Beccles face Southwold again on Saturday this time at Southwold.
