Beccles bounced back from last weeks’ disappointing defeat at Harlow with an emphatic victory over Old Brentwoods at Beef Meadow.

The first half was a cagey affair, with the Beccles pack struggling to find any continuity in the line out or scrum. Old Brentwoods used their strong forward pack to good effect, with some well worked driven mauls and close forward play, but this was nullified by some impressive defensive work from both Reece Ling and Daren Maeer.

The Beccles backs looked dangerous whenever they had their hands on the ball and this was exemplified by Luke Wade who cut through the line with ease, setting up a two on one to feed Sam Harmer for Beccles’ first try of the game. Soon after, Cameron Bonner’s line break and offload found it’s way to Harmer who in turn offloaded to Cemil Durak to score the second try of the half for the home side. A solitary Wade penalty and conversion gave Beccles 15-0 lead at HT.

The second half proved to be a much more one sided affair. With the pitch at Beef Meadow being firm for the first time in 2015, this proved to aid Beccles to play the expansive running game in which they thrive on.

Luke Wade was in imperious form, cutting through the opposition line at will and setting up several tries in the process. The first came from Stuart Armstrong, soon followed by Cameron Bonner, Shaun Lake and Ben Rouse. Wade then grabbed a try of his own before Sam Driver ran from his own twenty-two to score a fine solo try under the posts.

Beccles remained resolute in defence with some crunching hits from Dave Tieuti and Robert Hall drawing in mistakes from the tiring visitors. A fine run by Keith Johnstone set up a Tris Holtzer try before Matt Goode fed Gavin Hewitt for his first try of the season.

Old Brentwoods, to their credit, made Beccles work hard in the closing stages and were rewarded with a try in the corner and a penalty try in the final play.

In a game where the whole squad played their part in an enthralling display, B&B Skip Hire Man of the Match was given to Ben Rouse.

Beccles have a week off next week before travelling to league leaders Sudbury on the 21st March.
