Beccles started the game strongly. Evans used his kicking game to good effect, putting up the high ball which led to Sudbury knocking the ball on on numerous occasions. This combined with a some strong Beccles tackling typified by B&B Skip Hire Man of the Match Cameron Bonner, meant that Sudbury leaked penalties.
Wade was on point, slotting three penalties within ten minutes, all from forty metres out. Beccles continued to dominate possession and territory throughout the half but could not find the breakthrough they needed. Sudbury then came back into the game, nullifying Beccles’ lead with three penalties of their own. HT: 9-9.
The second half was a battle of power. With a wet and boggy pitch, the conditions did not allow either side to play their expansive games by which they enjoy playing. Within the opening exchanges of the half Sudbury took the lead for the first team through another penalty.
Sudbury continued to test the Beccles defence but home side remained resolute, through some crunching hits from Sale, Tieuti and Hall. Sudbury eventually found a breakthrough when their winger broke through a tackle out wide, giving him a free run in under the posts.
The home side continued to compete, and another Wade penalty brought them within touching distance. A scalp looked to be on the cards as the home side began to build momentum, but failure to capitalise on the set-piece in the Sudbury twenty-two looked to be the home side’s downfall. Sudbury crushed Beccles’ hopes when they pushed over the try-line from a driven line-out, robbing Beccles of a deserved bonus point.
Next week, Beccles travel to Cantabs, whilst the second team have another week off.
