Beccles travelled to Upminster with a depleted squad due to unavailability and were further reduced in numbers when Sam Harmer failed a late fitness test forcing Director of Rugby Michael Penney to name himself as a reserve. Open side Robert Hall moved to the wing and Giddins came off the bench to play second row. The Bulls luck soon changed when a long range penalty effort in the opening minutes from Luke Wade struck an upright and was collected by Chris Frost following up. He was brought down just short of the line however quick ruck ball was transferred to James Giddins who crashed over for a converted score. Frost was injured in the effort but manfully continued on the wing despite a very painful hip. Upminster had the benefit of their renowned slope and soon scored two tries neither of which were converted. The Upminster pack was well drilled in the set pieces with a hard driving number 8 closely supported by his back row colleagues keeping Beccles pinned in their half. A further try close to the posts after a classy break from the home fly half was again unconverted. Robert Wilson was closely shackled but kept ploughing forward supported well by Ling. A good break out by Ben Veasey-Lark gave Beccles a foothold in Upminster territory, this was rewarded by a penalty from Wade just before half time to keep the Bulls in contact.
The hosts scored a well taken try wide out on the right soon after the break to secure a bonus point and looked in danger of running away with the game. The home side three quarters were playing with confidence, fortunately new centre partnership Callum Roberts and Matt Calver were solid in midfield. Beccles defended stoutly with open side Darren Maeer making a real nuisance of himself and being greeted on his arrival at the breakdown like a pantomine villain by the enthusiastic home crowd. Aaron Guy continued his improvement as he came on for Danny Rix with Giddins moving to prop. Wade kicked a penalty from halfway and after two relatively simple penalty attempts were missed by the Upminster goalkicker Beccles saw the chance to salvage something from the game. Marcus Sale restored to his favourite scrum half position made several breaks and Wade thrived on his good service to put Upminster under pressure. Keith Johnstone and B & B skips man of the match Adam Edwards grafted hard all game and combined to steal Upminster ball with aggressive counter rucking. Wade put the ball deep into the Upminster 22 and from the ensuing lineout second team skipper Jon Pitts was able to touch down after a rolling maul. Luke Wade showed the value of a top class placekicker as he coolly slotted the conversion from the touchline to earn Beccles 2 points.
