Having to play at the Sir John Leman High School pitch Beccles forward dominance brought them a victory.

On another dreadful day for playing Rugby a disciplined Beccles effort saw them home comfortably against the Islanders. Playing into the strong wind for the first half Beccles soon gained ascendency in the forward exchanges limiting the vistors possession. The returning Chris Hinsley was having a field day stealing lineout ball and making a number of turnovers at the break down. Robert Wilson and B&B skips man of the match hooker Jon Pitts used their power to make the hard yards required through the middle. Wilson unfortunately fumbled what looked a certain pushover try in the atrocious connditions before Pitts was able to drive over from close range. Luke Wade converted to give the Bulls a 7-0 halftime lead with the advantage of the gale behind them in the second half.

Canvey took advantage of early Beccles complacency after the turnaround and had a try disallowed when the referee ruled their right winger had stepped into touch before going over. After this let off Beccles redoubled their defensive efforts with Robert Hall and Callum Roberts to the fore, Wade converted a penalty to turn pressure into points. Keith Johnstone and Reece Ling put in a huge effort in the tight to give Rob Wilson the chance to dot down a pushover try after a 20 yard rolling maul to make the lead 17-0. Marcus Sale was replaced by the effervescent Gavin Hewitt who immediately harrasssed the Canvey number 8 at the base of a scrum to force a knock on. A further Wilson try followed after a trademark bullocking run down the left flank shrugging off 4 would be tacklers to score in the corner to put the game out of reach for Canvey. As Luke Wade lined up the conversion from the far touchline there was a farcical scene as his kicking tee could not be found on the home sideline, responding to the verbal encouragement from the visitors Wade coolly dropped a goal to convert the try. With a 24-0 lead and 15 minutes to play Giddins and Paul wilson were introduced and both made an immediate impact with strong defence. Unfortunately despite clever snipes and quick taps from Gavin Hewitt once again Beccles were unable to clinch the bonus point score however can be satisfied with a job well done.
