Beccles were beaten by a hungrier Old Cantabs unit who capitalised on their basic errors

Beccles were undone by a combination of their own basic errors and a committed performance by Old Cantabs who capitalised on their scrum superiority and were hungrier at the breakdown. The game started in a similar disjointed fashion to the early season encounter at Beef Meadow with neither side putting together passages of play.Old Cantabs did force their way to the Beccles line but a resolute goal line stand by the Bulls kept their lines clear. The good work was undone just before half time when sloppy tackling allowed the Cantabs powerful centre to burst through from 25 metres for a 5-0 interval lead.

The Cantabs scrum started to gain the ascendency and from a heel against the head were able to move the ball to their left winger who touched down in the corner on the hour mark to extend the lead to 10-0. The bulls responded with stand in scrum half Mike Hawkes getting his power runners Wilson and Guntrip moving. Having elected to go for the corner rather than attempt a penalty kick skipper Adam Edwards was rewarded with a try from a driven lineout however unfortunately Luke Wade had a rare off day with his kicking and missed the conversion. A penalty kick gave Cantabs a 13-5 lead after 65 minutes which sparked the bulls to greater efforts. Having defended the breakdown tenaciously Cantabs looked as if they were starting to tire allowing Beccles to gain field postion. Unfortunately the Bulls three quarters were unable to move the ball into the wide channels with loose passing frustrating them. Continued spilt possession saw the game and the prospect of a losing bonus point disappear

Old Cantabs showed their hunger for the win by turning over possession in the final minutes with strong counter rucking and were rewarded with a second try down the left wing in the final minutes for a well deserved 20-5 win. B&B skips man of the match was Mike Hawkes Team Holtzer, Lake, Ling, Johnstone, Guntrip, Edwards, Starks, R Wilson, Hawkes, Wade, Frost, Sale, Harmer, Harrison, Veasey-Lark subs D Rix, K Rix, A Cooper
