Bulls fightback falls just short

Bulls fightback falls just short

Michael Penney19 Dec 2012 - 00:06

In a classic game of two halves Beccles just failed to secure a memorable victory at top of the table side Norwich

Playing with the wind in the first half Beccles soon had to make positional changes when the ever improving Ben Veasey-Lark had to leave the field with a nasty cut. The Bulls were unable to use the elements to maintain field position as they conceded penalties allowing Norwich to clear their lines. Luke Wade eventually slotted a penalty after Beccles first excursion into the hosts 22.

Norwich then demonstrated why they are the team to beat in this league with a sweeping move stretching the Beccles defensive both left and right before their left-wing went over to score a converted try. On their next possession Norwich‘s powerful centre burst through the usually watertight Bulls midfield and a deft offload once again had Beccles backpedalling. The ball was eventually moved to the right-winger who exploited the overlap and touchdown for an unconverted try. At the restart the Bulls were reduced to14 men after Rob Wilson make contact with the receiver before he fielded the kick. Norwich were now firing on all cylinders sucking in the Beccles midfield defence with short passes and exploiting the wide space. Their influential fly half Nick Austin had shown good footwork throughout and was rewarded with a try to make the score 19 points to 3 to the home side.

With the large crowd sensing a runaway victory and urging Norwich forward to secure the bonus point try Beccles had to demonstrate their resolve. A good break by Sam Williamson and a series of drives led by Sean Lake allowed Luke Wade to score another penalty kick. Wade was then able to burst down the blindside and score in the corner at the stroke of half-time to give Beccles a chance of recovery trailing by 19- 11. Unfortunately there was just enough time on the clock for Paul Wilson to receive a yellow card for exacting retribution on the Norwich tight head prop who was driving into Beccles lineout lifters.

Early in the second half the influential Norwich number eight Byrne was yellow carded for clumsily interfering with a quick tap penalty taken by Gavin Hewitt who was becoming increasingly lively at the base of the Beccles pack. Norwich continued to attempt to make ground through the middle of the pitch however flanker Gavin Starks racked up an incredible number of tackles to seal any space and prevent the Norwich backs spreading the ball wide. The home side resorted to tactical kicking which played into the hands of full-back Dylan Rowney who produced a series of scintillating breaks. The Beccles pack began to string together some driving plays before eventually Luke Wade was once again able to break the defensive line for a smartly taken try. Unfortunately the conversion attempt just missed however with the score at 19-16 and with 20 minutes to go the momentum seemed to be entirely with Beccles.

Although they did not show the precision of their first half attacks Norwich demonstrated they were also prepared to roll their sleeves up and defend to the last. Time and again Williamson and Rowney made inroads deep into the Norwich half but were cut down just before making the final crucial pass. Up front Beccles were also making good ground through Rob Wilson, Adam Edwards and Keith Rix. Rix had replaced the injured Gavin Starks whose tireless work earned him the B&B skips man of the match award. Danny Rix made a strong impression coming on to freshen up the front row and it appeared only a matter of time before Beccles struck the killer blow. Norwich showed a bit more nous than Beccles in the final stages and managed to steal crucial ball from Beccles rolling mauls and lineout to clear their lines and hang onto a deserved victory.
