Bulls edged out by Old Brentwoods

Beccles endured a frustrating day at Brentwood in a competitive match which got away from them in the last 10 minutes. The home side had a large experienced pack which Beccles hoped to move around to enable them to take advantage of an excellent wide pitch. The first half was hard fought with both sets of forwards fully committed none more so than Jack Tipple who’s tackling display was outstanding. Beccles capitalised on their initial pressure allowing Luke Wade to score a penalty kick, Wade was unlucky with another long-range effort which struck a post. Brentwood's responded with a penalty of their own and then scored a breakaway interception try as Wade tried to release Gavin Starks.

The local society referee had a continuing dialogue with the home side questioning his decisions which distracted him sufficiently to play an additional 10 minutes in the first half. The second half came alight when John Payne was able to release his outside backs and give debutant wing three-quarter Tom Harrison the chance to take on his man on halfway. With a classic swerve and powerful handoff he left his opposite number floundering, Brentwood's had ample cover however Harrison was not to be denied and showed power and pace to elude four more defenders and dive over. Luke Wade converted try to give Beccles a 10 – 8 lead. The home side responded quickly Beccles were penalised at the restart to allow their second row to gallop through and score an unconverted try.

The Bulls pack managed to secure territory and from a lineout 20 m out rolled a maul within 5 m of the opposition line. Captain Reece Ling peeled off and showed real athleticism for a big man to dive over between two defenders and touchdown one-handed. Luke Wade struck the conversion however despite both touch judges raising their flags the referee adjudged the kick had gone wide. When Wade questioned his decision a penalty was awarded against the Bulls from the restart. Once again the home side took no time to make inroads into the Beccles half and despite brave tackling by Ryan Boon good support play enabled them to score in the right corner.

The Bulls became increasingly frustrated and were penalised heavily by the referee who unfortunately had lost grip of the match. The final chance Beccles had was following another good break down the right flank which was thwarted by an early tackle on Vasey-Lark which went unpunished. Sam Harmer was then forced to leave the field after a late challenge which again was not penalised. A further penalty and a last-minute try gave a score line which flattered the home side and for the second week running Beccles did not secure a losing bonus point which may come back to haunt them at the end of the season.
