Wisbech 54 v Beccles 19

Wisbech 54 v Beccles 19

Keith Johnstone9 Oct 2019 - 18:15

Beccles again travelled, this time to Wisbech, where they came out losing 54-19.

Beccles came into the match looking hopeful for a win against a winless Wisbech team despite having suffered several injuries to first team players in the past weeks. The game started well for the boys in green, getting possession early on and making in-roads into the Wisbech defence. With ten minutes played however, Wisbech were able to get an intercept try and also a very quick one phase counter attacking try, demonstrating the great ball skills from props to wingers. Beccles, feeling hard done by at this point upped the ante and responded with even longer bouts of possession, only really being tested by their own knock ons or laspes in decision making. Beccles were able to pull two tries back, in the form of Gedney and Lambarth.
The lineouts were consistently dominant from Beccles coming in the form of James Ashdown and Seb Morton. As were the scrummages, coming from a front row of Holtzer, Morton and Adams who were man for man better than their opposition. Fine tackling was also on display from all who were wearing the Beccles shirt. In the dying seconds of the half, with the referees watch beeping, Wisbech were able to make a quick break in the Beccles half and capitalised on it with some good phases before going wide and giving the winger an easy walk in. No doubt this was a devastating blow for Beccles on the very cusp of half time, giving it a score of 19-14.
The second half kicked off and, in similar fashion to how the first half had preceded, Beccles kept on the pressure at the set piece and gaining good possession but were unable to do anything productive with it. While this was going on, Wisbech were able to keep counter attacking with force, running in another couple of tries. Beccles were able to pull one back at the end, Hannam made a line break, creating a two on one with the fullback which Jack Baldry was able to take advantage of as he outpaced the defensive support and touch it down. The game came to a close at 54-19 to the home team Wisbech. Beccles will feel frustrated at this result and with some work, hope they will get a better result in the reverse fixture.
MOTM was Seb Morton for consistent lineout throws and general play
