Beccles started on the front foot but came up against a determined Newmarket defence which they couldn’t find a way through. Beccles continued to dominate and it was Hamman who eventually unlocked the defence. He received the ball surrounded by defenders but a couple of sidesteps found a way through and he went over under the posts.
The second soon followed with Suchy finishing off a good team move. Kauri added a simple penalty to stretch the lead before Harrison got his first of the afternoon. Hannam then finished the scoring for the half with another break through the Newmarket defence. This gave a half time score of 31 – 0.
Newmarket continued to battle in the second half but Beccles continued to add to their score. Harrison added his second before Holtzer took over the scoring. His first came after a good break by Morton who gave the ball to Holtzer to go over. His second came after a number of tight drives were finished off with good support by Richardson.
It was then time for the Harrison show. Slick passing by the Beccles backs continually found space out wide for Harrison. First he completed his hat-trick before adding two more with some classy finishing. Harrison was named man of the match.
This gave a final score to Beccles of 69 – 0. The win guarantees a top two finish which may be enough for promotion. However, Beccles will be looking to secure top spot on Saturday to win the league and make sure. They need to avoid defeat when they travel to second placed Hadleigh and they will be crowned champions.
The second team have their last game of the season on Saturday when they travel to Norwich Union.
