Beccles win a tough game 31-5. The boys in green kicked off phase two of their season, and promotion push, in a home game against a well drilled Colchester 3’s side.

From the first whistle there were big hits being made left right and centre, the return of Darren Fisher for Beccles gave them a big boost and he led by example from start to finish putting tackle after tackle in. Colchester kept the ball very good early on and with Beccles giving up multiple penalties, it wasn’t long before Colchester 3’s managed to gain good territory. They kept it in the forwards and then whipped it out wide for a good team score; Beccles were down by 5 points.
The penalties kept on being conceded by Beccles and they were lucky not to be down to 14 due to the sheer volume they were giving up. As the half wore on however, the penalties slowed down and Beccles had a chance to keep possession and start playing in the Colchester half of the pitch. Cameron Bonner ended up going over for his seemingly mandatory try of the game after running a good line to break the tough defence.
Coming out of half time, Beccles had a 7-5. Early second half the pack started to work magic in the scrums and putting the Colchester forwards under constant pressure. It didn’t take long in the second half for Beccles to make the territory count, scrum-half Temm Kauri getting the try after a dominant scrum.
The big hits kept coming in, Bonner this time annihilating the opposition fly-half; the back row also putting in a shift getting around the park despite their combined ages coming close to 100years. Not long after Beccles’ second try, Ryan Barrett got the ball on the wing and after a foot race and quick step inside he managed to go over for a try.
Blair Hannam got Beccles’ 4th try of the day, again from a dominant scrum, the fly half got the ball and after a quick show-and-go he was over the whitewash. Barrett got his second of the day in similar fashion to his first, finding space on the wing he got the ball and after a footrace he found himself 5 meters out, he managed to shrug off a tackle and dive for the line in a great finish.
Kauri slotted 3/5 conversions to make the final score 31-5
MOTM was Barrett for his 2 tries and good finishing.
After this game, Beccles now sit second in the new table, 3 points adrift of leaders Hadleigh who they play at home this weekend (16th February). With only 5 games of the season remaining, they will continue their push for promotion.
The second team had to concede their trip to Holt due to lack of players. This week they travel to Southwold 2s. Anyone interested in playing rugby should come along to a training session, which are Tuesday and Thursday nights at 19:30, or call Keith Johnstone on 07788 430625.
