Beccles kicked off in to the wind knowing they were going to be in for a tough half. Medics dominated territory and possession but some good Beccles defence kept them out. Eventually Medics turned their pressure in to points with a converted try. Beccles couldn’t get out of their own half but continued to defend well and went in at half time only 7-0 behind.
Beccles needed to turn round now and use the wind to their advantage. However, they didn’t do this. They did have spells where they put pressure on the Medics line but didn’t take their chances and often took the wrong option.
Medics added a try after missed tackles and then a poor clearance kick let them in again. Beccles did then hit back. A spell of pressure from Beccles and a string of penalties conceded by Medics led to Gooney powering over. The referee was unsighted but Beccles were awarded a penalty try.
In the closing stages Medics added another a couple of tries as Beccles pushed for the come back. The final score was 33 – 7.
With their lead cut to 5 points at the top of the league Beccles need to bounce back from this poor performance when they host second placed North Walsham 2s at Beef Meadow on Saturday. A win would put their season firmly back on track.
The 2nd XV hosted Holt 3s and came away with a victory by 42 – 24. This week they have a Friday night game against Southwold 2s. KO 19:30.
