The game was back and forth to start with, both teams having spells of territory and possession. It was Diss who opened the scoring when their centre found a gap in the Beccles defence and scored under the post.
The Beccles pack began to get on top and regularly drove Diss back in the scrums. Beccles got deep in to the Diss half and from a ruck under the posts Pitts took the direct route and powered his way over to score. Kauri added the conversion. This left it all square at the break at 7-7.
Diss again struck first in the second half with an unconverted try. Again Beccles then took control. A number of scrums and penalties drove Diss back to their own line. Beccles again opted for a scrum and when Diss infringed to stop the Beccles drive the referee awarded a penalty try.
Beccles kept up the pressure and further extended their lead. A good take at the lineout from Catling was fed out to the backs who made ground. When the ball was moved back the other way it found Barrett in a yard of space. He put on the afterburners and scored a scintillating try. Kauri narrowly missed the conversion.
Beccles had a lead of seven with the match drawing to a close. They looked to close it out with a number of tight drives. However, Diss turned the ball over and broke dangerously. They looked to be clean under the posts for a try that would have earned them a draw. Suchy showed great pace to get back to make a cover tackle and force the pass. Diss still had the support to score but the ball was knocked on and Beccles escaped with victory by 12 – 19.
Man of the match was Pitts.
This was another win for Beccles, to make it eight in a row. The performance levels have dropped in the last few weeks but they are still grinding out the wins. They have a week off before they face local rivals Lowestoft and will be hoping to return to their early season performance levels for that game.
The second team picked up their first league win of the season with a 31 – 27 victory against Broadland 2s. There were tries from Sisley (2), Cooper (2) and Puxley. There was also four conversions from the boot of Fenn. Man of the Match was Tony Knights on his debut for the club. The second team is building well with a mixture of young and older players. They travel to Fakenham this week.
