After bad weather and flooded pitches over the past couple of months this game was played as a double points match to ease the end of season fixture congestion.
Beccles created some chances early on, with a few overlaps out wide not put away. It was Brightlingsea however who took the lead with a penalty. Beccles quickly came back and evened things up with a penalty of their own. Brightlingsea then took control and some sloppy Beccles defence let them in for three tries to lead at half time by 24-3.
After a stern talking to by coach Adams at half time Beccles looked to hit back but it was Brightlingsea who extended their lead with another converted try.
Beccles did then start to play some better rugby and put pressure on the opposition. With Beccles close to the Brightlingsea line a serious head and neck injury to one of the Brightlingsea stopped play. After a long break to wait for the ambulance and a change of pitch Beccles picked up where they left off. A strong scrum and carry by the forwards opened up the space and when the ball went wide to Sylvetser he went over in the corner.
Beccles kept up the pressure. Johnstone carried from a close range penalty and when the ball was quickly recycled Rix picked up and went over for another score.
A forward pass call denied a score for Sisley but Beccles soon scored again. Harrisson picked up the ball and cut through the defence to score.
With time running out Beccles were still two scores down. Beccles came hard at the opposition and kept the ball alive. The ball went wide and Sisley went over out wide to give Beccles the four try bonus point. Gedney then had a difficult conversion from the touchline to add a further bonus point for losing by less than seven. He duly slotted the conversion to give a final score of 31 – 25.
Beccles will be ruing the poor first half performance as this was a game they should have won. Indeed if the game had gone for another five minutes they could have completed the comeback. This week they travel to Bury St Edmunds III’s.
The second team will be playing their game this week on Friday night under lights. They host Norwich III’s in their final league game of the season (KO: 19:30). All support welcome.
