After six weeks of inaction due to bad weather and flooded pitches Beccles finally got some chance to play some rugby again on Saturday. Beccles travelled with a young side to play Sudbury Talbots and despite battling well went down by 41-7.

The game started off as a tight affair with both sides having spells of possession. Sudbury began to get on top in open play and pushed Beccles back in to their territory. A good defensive scrum by Beccles put Sudbury on the back foot but as the scrum wheeled this left a free run in for the Sudbury number eight to open the scoring.
Beccles were soon back in it. Up quickly in defence Sudbury were forced to throw a long pass wide which was intercepted by Sylvester on the halfway. He showed his pace and sprinted clear to score under the posts. Gedney added the conversion to put Beccles in to the lead.
Beccles defended well but the pacey Sudbury winger got in behind the Beccles defence to score the first of his hat-trick. Girling took a knock to the head trying to make a cover tackle and had to go off for a Head Injury Assessment. With no subs this meant Beccles were down to fourteen for the rest of the half. Sudbury took advantage adding two more tries to lead at half time by 24 – 7.
Back up to fifteen in the second half Beccles continued to battle away. Special mention must go to the youngsters Sisley and Sylvester who have stepped up well to senior rugby this year and continue to impress. Also to Sisley snr who made his 1st Xv debut to make sure Beccles had a full fifteen.
There were some good passages of play by Beccles in the second half but they couldn’t turn them in to points. With Sudbury able to bring on fresh legs they began to find gaps and score a further three tries during the second half. This gave a final score of 41-7.
Man of the Match was Keith Johnstone.
The second team again had to concede their game due to lack of numbers. With just one month of the season remaining the club are looking for any players to help us fulfil our remaining fixtures. So if you have played for us before or are new to the club we would love to have you involved. Come along to a training session (Wednesdays at 19:30) or contact Keith Johnstone (07788 430625, kjohnstone1503@yahoo.co.uk).
