After losing to the same opposition away the previous week by 41- 7 Beccles were able to field a much stronger side for the home match. With rain on Friday night waterlogging the Beccles pitches a late change of venue saw them move to the Leman School pitch.
The game was even to begin with but Beccles began to exert their control as the half moved on. It was Beccles who opened the scoring. A strong run by Gooney was stopped ten meters short of the Sudbury line. The ball was quickly recycled to Gedney who jinked his way through the cover defence to score. Gedney added the conversion.
Sudbury quickly hit back with a converted try of their own to level the scores. Beccles were on top in the scrum and keeping the ball well through a number of phases. They kept the pressure on and Gedney nudged them in to the lead with a penalty. This gave a half time score of 10 – 7.
Beccles turned round with the wind behind them and kept Sudbury pinned in their own half. Gedney added three more penalties to further extend their lead.
As the game moved in to the last quarter Beccles lost first Johnstone then Cooper to the sinbin. Sudbury upped the pressure and despite some heroic defence from Beccles they eventually found their way over in the corner for an unconverted try.
This brought them within seven points but it was Beccles’s turn to hit back quickly. The ball was retained well and driven deep in to Sudbury territory. The ball was fed wide and Harrison rounded the defence to score out wide. Gedney completed a man of the match performance adding a good conversion. Beccles won by 26 – 12.
