With a new pre-match routine the Bulls lined up with increased focus and purpose.
With the wind at their back it was the home team whom started the better. Camped in the Bulls 22, Chelmsford took advantage of some poor kicking and scored 2 early counterattacking tries through some electric fullback and winger running.
Following some words from skipper Lake the Bulls turned the game on its head in the next 20min played some fantastic team rugby.
The Bulls’ forwards started dominating their opposition pack in both set-pieces and contested areas. Following some powerful surges from Rix, Coleman and Holmes, the now much fancied Bull’s backline was now receiving quality ball. With Izuzquiza and Cooper now pulling the strings, it was new centre pairing Long and Davey-Durak whom now provided the momentum and platform for the Bulls game plan to kick-in.
Eventually both territory and possession were rewarded with 2 superb Bulls’ team tries, both converted. The first scored by ever present prop Porter following strong surges Ling and Starkes and a well executed lineout take from the improving Coleman. The second was scored by quick thinking scrum half Izuzquiza whom taped quickly from a slipped numerous tackles to score under the posts.
The last scoring of the half did go to the home team with another scintillating run from their fullback.
Half time score: Chelmsford 21 Beccles 14
With a fading wind behind them, the Bulls knew a victory was in sight. After a quiet focused team huddle the Bulls went about playing their best 40 minutes of team rugby this season.
The second half started well with some great ball carrying charges from David Rix and machine-like Johnstone. With Lake and Coleman now starting to bully the opposition, the backline had the luxury of front foot ball and started playing some attacking rugby.
The Bulls defence was superb and started to rattle the home team. A quick turnover ball resulted in quick hands wide for the inform Davey-Durak to cross the line his 3rd in as many weeks.
Good phased rugby gained the Bulls great field position, only to be pushed back by a number of disappointing penalties. This resulted in conversion of 2 easy penalties to the home team.
The Bulls quickly stormed back with some great forward power plays and super flowing backs play, which eventually resulted in the Man of Match Wade crashing over for the Bulls 4th try and valuable bonus point.
Final score: Chelmsford 27 Beccles 24
Another encouraging performance and step forward from the Bulls, picking up 2 bonus points.
The tight 5 delivered again and completely dominated their opposition. Lake and jumpers were flawless at lineout time, and the backrow enjoyed their best collective outing and must now raise it again for this week. Turnover ball is the best ball to attack from.
The backs finally clicked with suburb handing, lines of running & support but more importantly option taking. But this must be achieved for 80min, not 60.
This was the best collective performance of the season with all 15 players raising their games to the expected London 2 level with forwards & back linking to deliver a true team performance. This was achieved with players being challenged to show greater individual discipline and commitment to their own pitch jobs.
With 3 of the 4 remaining games at home the Bulls remain very positive about survival.
This week the Bulls are home to high flying Basildon. A beating man might just place a checkie £5er on the Bulls.
