Ipswich 71 v Beccles 14

Keith Johnstone16 Jan 2012 - 17:31

Following a good performance last week the Bulls travelled into Saturday’s fixture against Ipswich with an air of quiet optimism.

The weather was perfect for running rugby and the game started with clear intent on the side of the visitors to move the ball through structured phases and play territory. The Bulls pack was rampant in the first 10 minutes and the home team had no answers to power or precision of set pieces. Backed up by some deft touches & direct running from the backs, the Bulls were camped on the home sides try line and twice were held up over the line. Credit to the Ipswich defence for holding firm and eventually causing a knock on which lead them eventually clearing their line.
Given the opening periods of play the travelling Bulls dignitaries and supporters certainly had cause to be positive, if not confident of another solid performance and likely victory, the pints were being topped up and banter with local stalwarts was flowing.
How wrong that outlook was....
The next 70 minutes was an exhibition of how to play ‘raw power & precise’ open rugby. Unfortunately the majority coming from the home-side whom has clearly been busy over the festive period recruiting some well scouted foreign additions to their squad.
Regardless of where the Ipswich players reside from the rugby was simply awesome and belies their medico 50/50 win-loss league results.
While returning back-rower Wilson did power over for a well taken Bulls try the home-side ran in 6 text book scores, most from their own half. The mobility of the Ipswich pack created endless overlaps out wide and simple hands had the Bulls scrambling in defence.

Half time score: Ipswich 36-7 Beccles
The second half was like ground-hog day and a mirror of the first half.
While the Bulls through Wade did score an intercept try the home-side were irresistible and the show piece continued relentlessly.

Full time score: Ipswich 71- 14 Beccles
While clearly a disappointing result, credit must be given to Ipswich for whom played almost the perfect game and we look forward to following their results for the remainder of the season.

Positives for the Bulls:
While trounced on the scorecard, the Bull pack did edge their opposition in both scrums & lineouts, but this dominance but now also transition to the open contested areas and general fitness & mobility.
The performance of B&B Skip Hire man of the match Starks on debut was most impressive. Starks’ has now set new standards of commitment that all Bulls must strive for.
On day Wade’s kick-off were simply text book, short & high.....practice makes perfect I guess
A weeks rest now before the Bulls take on Woodford in another must win home fixture on 28th January.

Things to work on for the Bulls:
Again while the score line depicts a pasting, the Bulls did enjoy good patches of phased rugby and territory, but too often handed the back to the opposition whom went wide early and scored from deep. Ball retention and patience to attack will likely be on the coaches training plan this week.
While the opposition had size and power the Bulls tackling, defensive alignment and general communication could have been better.

Conclusion:
We archive this result, keep working hard at training and re-focus immediately onto Woodford in 2 weeks. A good win against Woodford takes the Bulls above the relegation line
