Beccles travelled to local rivals Lowestoft in their last match of the year. The game began in a physical fashion with both sides trying to out muscle the other.

Lowestoft used their kicking abilities well by pinning Beccles in their own half. They continued to probe and press however Beccles remained strong with Wade, Rix and Ling all hitting hard. An infringement at the breakdown allowed Lowestoft to convert their first points of the game making the score 3-0. Throughout the half Beccles struggled to clear their lines and found themselves defending for the most part. Sustained pressure from Lowestoft inevitably led to another penalty, which they again converted to take a 6-0 lead.
Beccles remained resilient and some clever kicking from Wade and Cooper provided a platform for which Beccles could attack. Lowestoft conceded a penalty, Wade stepped up and converted to make the half time score 6-3.
Beccles came into the game much more in the second half. Long continued his rich run of form with some strong running from full back. Both Coleman and Hinsley dominated their opposite numbers in the lineout. The pack as a whole was dominant in the scrum, winning the ball against the head several times.
Lowestoft soon found themselves on the Beccles five metre line and were prevented from scoring thanks to some great last defensive work from the Beccles side.
Lowestoft were again given a penalty, making the score 9-3. In the closing stages of the game, Beccles knew that a converted try would be needed in order to secure a win. In the middle of the pitch the ball fell loose to Armstrong who cut through the opposition deep inside the twenty-two. However, Beccles could not keep the forward momentum and Lowestoft were able to clear their lines. The final score was 9-3.
Beccles will be encouraged by the strong defensive display they put up on this occasion against a side in a good run of form. Going into the new year several players will be coming back from injury and these are positive signs Beccles can turn their season around.
The club would also like to thank Ian Rees for his time and commitment he has given over the past three season. Ian will be leaving his role as head coach due to work commitments. Under Ian, Beccles has achieved its highest ever league level of rugby and the club would like to wish him all the best for the future.
