Following a spirited performance last week against league leaders the Bulls travelled into Saturday’s fixture against Saffron Walden in positive mood.
The weather and pitch was perfect for running rugby, however it was the home team whom had the better start. Saffron Walden were rampant in the first 20 minutes scoring 4 well worked tries, all the result of turnover ball from ruck situations.
While the Bulls’ scrum was dominant, tackling and contested areas were poor. Following a break from Long, a penalty was awarded to the Bulla and converted Flanker Wade stepped and duly slotted a penalty before half time to restore some Bull’s pride.
While down on the score board at half time the Bulls’ remained in confident mood following some positive words from Skipper Lake and Coach Ian Rees.
The second half started well with the Bulls enjoying good territory & procession, but final passes went to ground and the ball continued to be turned over from contested areas. The emphasis eventually did swing back the home team’s way and they were able to breakout and open the second half scoring with a well taken penalty.
For the next period of play Saffron Walden dominated both possession and territory. The Bulls’ defence withheld repeated attacks but eventually the flood gates opened and the home side ran in another 3 well taken team tries.
The Bulls then dug deep and scored an excellent team try finished off by Wade out wide following some classy hands from the inform Davey-Durak.
Unfortunately it was Saffron Walden whom had the last say in this match, and it was fitting that the opposition backrow would cross under the posts.
This week the Bull’s have a rest from league action and travel away to Welwyn City RFU to compete in the second round of the league cup opposition.
