The weather was again perfect for running rugby and while the visitors Romford & Gidea Park were league leaders, the Bulls’ were quietly confident following improved performance the past 2 outings and 2 effective training sessions behind them.
However it was the visitors whom started the better, running rampid with pace and power through a sleepy and stunned home team. The Bulls’ conceded 4 tries in the opening 20 minutes and the visitors raced to a 22.0 lead.
Following some calming words from skipper Lake and some roars from a now load passionate home crowd the Bulls’ turned the game on its head and played the next 20min as if they were the league leaders.
The Bulls’ forwards started dominating their opposition pack in both set-pieces and contested areas. Following some powerful surges from Rix, Wilson and Holmes, the now much fancied Bull’s backline was now receiving quality ball. With Izuzquiza and Cooper now pulling the strings, it was centres Sale and Davey-Durak whom now provided the momentum and platform for the Bulls’ game plan to kick-in.
Eventually both territory and possession were rewarded with 3 superb Bulls’ team tries. The first 2 tries were setup by the hard working and returning winger Vasey-Lark, and then counterpart winger Hoffman whom continues to improve each week. Ling scored his second in as many weeks, while Sale scored the other following some sterling work from returning second row pairing of Wilson and Johnstone.
The final score of the half went to the inspirational Sale, whom hit the ball at pace following some quick thinking from scrum half Izuzquiza.
Half time score: Beccles 17-20 Romford Gidea Park
With a strong wind behind them second half, the Bulls’ knew an upset was now very possible.
The second half started well with some great ball carrying charges from Porter and Coleman. With Lake and David Rix now starting to bully the opposition the backline had the luxury of going wide early. Fullback Long hit the backline at pace, and with excellent support from his wingers were able to make huge inroads into the opposition territory.
Twice the Bulls’ went over the line and scored, only to be disallowed or not visible to the referee. This would turn out to be expensive and cost the game.
While the Bulls’ did score another fantastic team try following backline hands from Lake to Wade whom turned his defender inside out to score wide, the early Bulls’ misfortunate provided the visitors with the impetus to regain their composure and turn the fixture back in their favour. Two late tries and a penalty made the score a little flattering for the visitors, but credit where credits due, they were worthy winners on the day.
Final score: Beccles 22-37 Romford Gidea Park
Another encouraging performance from the Bulls. The pack has turned a corner and is now using their size and power to dominate opposition, which in turn is providing a potentially lethal backline with quality ball from which they can win games for Beccles RFC.
This week the Bulls travel confidently to mid-table Saffron Walden .
