Beccles were able to field a strong side for the game. Hazzard was called up to play his first game in a couple of years at scrum-half to replace the injured Puxley.
Beccles took the game to the opposition straight from the kick off. They cut through the opposition and nearly opened the scoring without the opposition touching the ball. They were kept out but managed to keep the pressure on. It didn’t take long to get on the board. Space opened up on the edge of a ruck on the twenty two which Rix exploited to storm away for the first try. Harmer added the conversion.
Swaffham hit back with a penalty but Rix added a second, again finding space around the edge of the ruck. Harmer again converted. Wilson added a third try before Swaffham pulled one back.
It was Beccles who finished the half stronger with Harrison and Hazzard both going over. Harmer added the extras and Beccles led at half time by 33-8.
Beccles tried to reduce their penalty count after half time but continued to fall foul of the referees whistle. Swaffham took advantage and added a try and penalty try during the half.
Beccles still managed to score regularly as well. Wilson added a second when he powered over to touch down. Calton also finished off a good move after Beccles had turned over loose ball.
With the pitch starting to freeze the game moved in to its last play. Gedney chipped over the top and with the loose ball ricocheting over line Harmer touched down. He added the conversion to finish the game. Beccles won by 50 – 20.
Man of the Match was Girling.
Beccles face Diss II on Saturday in their last game before Christmas. They also move in to the semi-finals of the Norfolk Intermediate Cup which will take place in the new year.
The second team had to again concede their fixture on Saturday due to lack of players. Anyone interested in joining the club or giving rugby a try should come along to a Wednesday training session (7:30pm) or contact coach Stuart Adams (07795 415028). All welcome.
