After winning the home fixture earlier in the season Beccles were confident of being able to repeat the performance. Despite missing a few players they were still able to field a strong side.
Beccles lost Ling early to a rib injury and the large Norwich Union pack were able to get on top. They kept the ball tight and powered their way over with a driving maul to open the scoring. They then added another try with some more tight work from the forwards. This gave a half time score of 12 – 0.
Beccles began to play some better rugby in the second half and were soon back in the game. They kept the ball alive for a few phases and when it was fed outside to Harmer he found his way over. Gedney added the conversion to move within five.
Beccles were on top now and looking threatening. After another series of possession Harmer again crashed over in a pile of bodies and touched down. However, the referee didn’t see it and the try was not awarded.
This seemed to lift Norwich Union and they upped their game. It was their turn then to crash over the line in a repeat of the disallaowed Beccles try. However, this time the referee awarded the try to seal the game for Norwich Union. The final score was 17 – 7.
Man of the Match was Rory Calton in only his second game for the first team after some good running from the wing.
