Beccles were able to field a strong side for their first game. Wilson and Hinsley added some experience to the pack. The young players were also represented with Arnold, Puxley and Girling picking up where they left off last year.
Beccles started the game well and kept possession well. After many phases the space opened up for Girling to go over in the corner. From the kick off Beccles kept the ball again and Harmer cut through to score on his return to the team. Beccles were two tries up before the opposition had barley touched the ball.
Beccles took their foot off the gas then and allowed Broadland in for a converted try and penalty. Beccles were stirred in to action again and Gedney and Harmer scored to stretch the lead and secure the bonus point. This gave a half time score of 26 – 10.
In the second half Beccles were on top again early on. An extended period of pressure saw the ball worked wide to Wilson who powered over to score. Broadland had another purple patch and added a try of their own.
It was Beccles who finished the stronger though. First Man of the Match Harmer completed his hatrick before Holtzer completed the scoring. Harmer had kicked five out of seven conversions to give a final score of 45 – 15.
The second team travelled to Norwich. They had fourteen players and were soon down to thirteen with an injury to Marcus Dyer. However, they battled hard to come away with a win by 10 – 5.
Beccles entertain Norwich Union on Saturday in their first home game of the season. The second team travel to Wymondham.
