The game started as a tight affair with few scoring chances. It was Beccles who started to play the better rugby. Gedney was kicking well to put the opposition on the back foot and the Beccles pack were taking the game to the opposition.
After thirty minutes there had been no score. It was Newmarket against the run of play that opened the scoring. Some poor tackling from the kick off let them straight back in for another try. They then added a third before half time to lead 21 – 0 at the break.
Beccles hoped to force their way back in to the game in the second half. However, the big Newmarket forwards had their tails up now and carried the ball hard against the Beccles defence. They added six more tries during the second half to clinch the game.
Beccles did manage a score of their own in the second half. Some good driving down the right got in behind the opposition. The ball was recycled quickly and fed out to the left where Armstrong went over to score.
The final score was 5 – 57. Man of the Match was Russell Arnold.
On Saturday Beccles travel to leaders Thetford for a tough game. The seconds are at home to Watton.
