After a number of call offs on Saturday morning Beccles only travelled with fifteen players plus coach Wayne Knight on the bench for emergency use. Jake Yeowell played despite being injured and put in a man of the match performance.
Beccles started the game well. A clearing kick from Colchester was caught by fullback Armstrong out wide on the half way line. He cut through a number of tackles and out paced the Colchester defence to score under the posts. Yeowell added the conversion.
After this Colchester took control. Some poor tackling from Beccles meant that Colchester were able to run in a number of tries.
Beccles improved a bit after half time and were competitive in the match for a while. However, an interception try from Colchester put Beccles back on the back foot again and as heads dropped Colchester took advantage and scored freely again. The final score was 76 – 7.
This was another tough defeat for Beccles and they will need a big effort from the players to turn it around. The team will be looking to improve training and match day availability to enable them to compete in this league.
This week the 1st team have a break from league action when they host Verulamians in the second round of the RFU Junior Cup. Verulamians are based in St Albans and are currently top of the Herts and Middlesex league. KO 3pm.
The second team hosted Holt II on Saturday and were able to field full side for only the second time this season. They lost the game 27 -22 against a strong Holt side but did pick up two bonus points for scoring four tries and losing by less than seven.
