Captain Johnstone was able to pick from a stronger squad this week with the number of unavailbilites reducing. Arnold continued his new role at Hooker and Gedney returned to the back row after a spell in the backs. Payne moved into the centres with Yeowell at Fly-half.
Beccles did pick up an early Yeowell penalty but it was Thurston who dominated the opening twenty minutes. They scored a couple of tries to take control of the game.
Beccles got back in to it with a try from Armstrong. He picked the ball up out wide just inside the Thurston half. He cut in field and evaded a number of tackles to go over under the posts. Yeowell added the conversion.
Beccles scored again after some good phases by the forwards sucked in the defence. As the ball went wide there was a wide space for Yeowell to go over in the corner. This gave a half time score of 15 – 14.
As in the first half Beccles started the second half poorly. Thurston took advantage and added two more tries to move in to the lead again. Beccles then picked up a try of their own to pull the score back. Yeowell put a pass out in midfield which was intercepted by his opposite number. Immediately after Armstrong intercepted the next pass and sprinted clear to touch down under the posts. Yeowell added the conversion.
Thurston hit back with another try and looked in control with a seven point lead and time running out. However, Beccles clicked in to gear and came back strong. Gedney moved in to the centre and looked dangerous with ball in hand. Man of the Match Armstrong was put in to space and went over for his hatrick try. Yeowell added the conversion. To level up the scores.
Beccles pushed on looking for the win. A good break by Gedney punctured the defence before he picked up Larkworthy running a good line. Larkworthy sprinted clear to score under the posts. Yeowell added the conversion to seal the match by 36-29.
This was a good win for Beccles after some improving performances after a tough start. They will now be looking to kick on starting with a trip to Wisbech on Saturday.
Beccles seconds again suffered a heavy defeat as they travelled to Diss III with a reduced squad. Anyone interested in playing rugby for Beccles should contact Captain Keith Johnstone (07788430625). We welcome all players whatever their experience or ability.
