With a full side unavailable this week for various reasons Beccles had to call on a number of the younger and second team players to make up the side. Many of the more regular first team players had to play out of position which further hindered the side.
The side were further hindered when they lost debutant Donovan and Fisher to injury within the first ten minutes. Bury soon began to exploit the gaps in the Beccles defence and some good running from their backs brought them four first half tries to take control of the game.
The best moment for Beccles came at the start of the second half. After a few phases of possession Beccles were able to feed the ball wide. A good offload by Armstrong was collected by another debutant Scott who went over in the corner.
Bury were soon back in charge and continued to score at will throughout the second half. They added six more tries to give a final score of 64-5.
Despite the heavy defeat the players that turned out can still take some pride in their performance. They never gave up and kept going right to the end. Beccles entertain Wymondham on Saturday and will be looking to kick start their season after a difficult start.
Despite losing most of their team to the first team the second team did manage to put a side out. With a few veterans and part-time players called in, as well as a bit of help from Lakenham they did manage to get a game. They also conceded 60 points but did manage 27 of their own, the highlight being two tries from Hoffman on his return from a long injury lay off.
Beccles need to add to their squads to give them more players to select from. They are looking for players of any ability or experience who would like to play a bit of rugby. So whether you have played a bit before or are just looking to start out then please consider getting involved. You can come along to training on Tuesdays (19:00) or Thursdays (19:30) or give 1st XV Captain Keith Johnstone a call on 07788430625.
