Beccles were missing the injured Ling and the Armstrong brothers. Dyer and Maidment made their last appearances before going off to university.
Beccles started the game well and pinned the opposition in their own half. After about twenty minutes the pressure told and they opened the scoring. After a good run by Geyser there was a ruck on the twenty-two. Yeowell saw space in behind and chipped ahead. Gedney chased up and won the race to touch down. Yeowell added the conversion.
As half time approached Ipswich played their way out of defence and put the Beccles defence under pressure. After a sustained spell of pressure they went over to level the scores up at half time.
Despite having the wind behind them in the second half Beccles didn’t play territory as well as they should have done. Both sides had chances but neither took them. In the end it was Ipswich who broke that deadlock. There was some hesitation in the Beccles defence after what looked like a forward pass allowed the Ipswich centre to break through. This allowed him time to get away and score under the posts.
Beccles still had time to get in to the game but they showed they have not shaken off the losing habit of last season as they couldn’t respond. In the end it was Ipswich who added two more scores to close the game out.
The final score was 26-7 and the Beccles man of the match was John Walker.
This week Beccles entertain Woodbridge in their first game at home in the league (KO 3pm). They will be looking to get back to winning ways and get their season started with a win.
