After their shock win last year in this fixture Beccles new they would be up against a much more determined Southwold team this year than they did last. This proved to be the case. There was a strong wind blowing down the pitch which Beccles played in to in the first half.
Beccles struggled to get out of their half for the first forty minutes with some good Southwold play and the wind keeping them pinned in their own territory. Southwold scored three tries during the half with some good Beccles defence stopping them scoring further tries. The half time score was 17 – 0.
Beccles felt that this wasn’t a bad half time score considering the wind but they couldn’t use the wind to the same advantage in the second half. Beccles were able to put together some better attacks but couldn’t capitalise on their chances.
Southwold played well out of defence and dominated the breakdown and added a further three tries during the second half. The final score was 36 – 0.
In the corresponding 2nd team fixture Southwold were victorious again winning by 46 – 5. After a couple of hundred point losses against the same opposition during the season this was an improvement for Beccles. It was good to field a full team as well after a tough season for the twos side.
This brings a very successful season to an end for Beccles. The first XV only lost three games all season, winning both league they were a part of. They will now be promoted to London Division 3 Eastern Counties next season. It will be a good step up for the team and they will be looking to continue to develop as a side at a higher level. Before that is the end of season celebration on May 18th at the Waveney. See website for ticket details.
