Beccles have appointed a new coach during the summer. Wayne Knight has joined the club as coach and has been putting the players through their paces during the preseason training. Wayne received his Eastern Counties Coach of the Year Award for the work he carried out a Norwich Union last season.
The new 1st XV captain for the season is Keith Johnstone. He will be looking to bring together a squad made up of a mixture of experience and youth. Both the 1st and 2nd teams will be looking to rebuild after relegation last season.
Both sides were using the game as a training exercise, with four twenty minute quarters being played. Beccles started the game the stronger and put pressure on the Holt defence. They opened the scoring as forwards and backs combined well to put Cam Armstrong in at the corner.
In the second quarter some mistakes from the Beccles team allowed Holt in for three tries to move in to the lead.
Justin Geyser, returning to Beccles after a few years of not playing, impressed with his tackles and ball carries throughout the game. Maeer also put in a good performance winning turnovers around the park. New recruits Morgan and Mason also showed some promise on their debut.
Holt began to show their class in the third quarter, adding another three tries to take control of the game.
However, it was Beccles who again dominated in the final quarter of the game. With some tough pre-season fitness work showing its benefit Beccles finished the game strongly. They were rewarded when a good team move with well finished by Stu Armstrong to give a final score of 34-12.
Beccles travel to Broadland on Saturday for their final preseason game before the leagues start the following week. The 1st XV start with a trip to Ipswich YM whilst the 2nd team entertain Broadland 2’s. We are looking to add to our squad for the coming season.
