Broadland started the game well and forced an early penalty to take the lead. From then on Beccles took control of the game. The pack were dominant, especially at the line out and the half-back pairing of Yeowell and Payne kept Broadland on the back foot.
Beccles opened the scoring when a good move down the right was stopped short of the line. It was recycled quickly and went wide quickly for Girling to score in the opposite corner.
Beccles kept up the pressure and the elusive running of the Armstrong brothers Stu and Cam saw them pick up one try a piece. One of these was converted by Cam to give a half time score of 3-17.
Broadland upped their game in the second half and Beccles found them harder to break down. Beccles also conceded more penalties in the second half allowing Broadland to relieve any pressure they were able to build.
Beccles did eventually add a further try. Gedney picked up a loose ball and used his pace to round the Broadland defence and sprint clear under the posts. The final score was 3-22.
After a difficult year last Beccles have had a good preseason. Captain Johnstone is happy with the two warm up games and thinks the team has a good chance of a successful season. The first team kick off their season with a trip to Ipswich YMCA on Saturday. The second team also begin their season when the entertain Broadland II.
