Beccles progressed into the next round of the RFU Senior Vase Cup, when they defeated Welwyn in a tough fought encounter at Beef Meadow.

In wet and slippery conditions Beccles were the first to adapt, choosing to use their forwards well with some close play at the breakdown. This was to pay dividends as Welwyn infringed for handling in the ruck and Wade coolly slotted the three points.

With the team without their trusty lineout option of Hinsley, Tipple stepped up to the plate and delivered solid ball throughout the game.

Welwyn to their credit, had a fearsome scrum that provided them with a platform to run the ball whenever possible, however, too many handling errors combined with some strong defending from centers Sale and Williamson proved too much for the visitors.

Another penalty from Wade doubled Beccles' lead to 6-0. The back row continued to impress, Tipple’s work rate, Wilson’s strong running as well as a great all-round performance from B&B Skip-Hire man of the match Starks, who was particularly impressive at the breakdown.

With the half coming to the close, Welwyn probed into the Beccles twenty-two, Beccles infringed at the breakdown and the visitors reduced the deficit to 6-3.

With the first half being the dominated by forward play the second was to be dominated by the backs. Williamson showed good awareness to intercept the ball on the half way line and finished off impressively, which Wade converted. From this point it was all one-way traffic. A series of drives from the Beccles pack provided a good platform for Hewitt who fed top try-scorer R Wilson, who crashed over emphatically for Beccles' second try. Wade converted the honours to make the score 20-3.

In typical fashion of late, Beccles took their foot off the gas. Three penalties in quick succession for going in at the side meant that Giddins was the man to pay the price and received a yellow card.

The well-drilled Welwyn outfit made the most of their one-man advantage and scored a try of their own through a series of pick-and-drives.

There may well have been more but for some hard hitting from the returning John Hoffman kept the opponents at bay.

With the game coming to an end Welwyn found themselves running out of their own five-meter line. The winger knocked the ball on allowing Williamson to hack the ball through and dive over for his second try of the game. The final score was 27-8.

Beccles will be happy with the way in which they dispatched a competent Welwyn outfit, as well as displaying some fine individual performances, including Hewitt, Edwards and the in-form Wade.

The Bulls have now won five games on the bounce and will hope their winning form continues when they entertain Upminster at Beef Meadow, 2.00 KO.
