Due to injuries and unavailability coach Keith Rix had limited options however the core of those players who have been ever present at pre-season training stepped up to the mark. Solid first XV debuts were made by Aaron Guy, Martin Toms and Fabrice Deroubaix along with a cameo appearance by uber-veteran Michael Penney.
Haringey started the first quarter strongly with committed driving play testing the Bulls defence. Two tries were created by the wily Haringey fly half utilising his strong running outside centre to break the gain line and exploiting mis-matches in the Beccles defensive line. Beccles started to gain an edge in the set piece and clever work by man of the match Gavin Hewitt having an assured game at scrum half lead to his converted try before half time to close the deficit.
In the third quarter the Beccles pack raised their game with the abrasive Liam Sutton to the fore as they gained ascendency. Triz Holtzer showed his versatility filling in at number 8 supported by prop Danny Rix who gained valuable yards close to the breakdown. After a sustained spell of forward pressure skipper Rees Ling plunged over from a rolling maul following a clean take at the line out by Ryan Guntrip to give the bulls the lead. Haringey responded with a try from a close range drive after elusive running from their rangy left winger.
With the match evenly balanced two long range penalty opportunities were coolly taken by Luke Wade. Wade then capped his most composed display in a Beccles shirt with a clever interception try and a touchline conversion to clinch the game. Haringey continued to press however strong tryline defence by Ben Vasey-Lark and Alan Cooper kept them from narrowing the gap to a single score. Rees Ling lead from the front and dominated the scrum in the final quarter to deny the hosts clean possession as time expired.
Coach Rix was encouraged by the superior fitness showed by the Beccles side as a result of the squads efforts at training. This week Beccles complete their pre-season programme with a visit to last years London Division 3NE champions Holt who have recruited well this summer and will provide a stern test.
