Saturday saw Beccles RFC host it's first annual 'Rugby Fun Day'. Under
the blazing hot sunshine, it was the perfect day for Beccles to showcase
all that is good about the club.
Thanks to a batch of hardworking volunteers, there was something for
everyone including bouncy castles, BBQ, live music and, of course,
matches of rugby.
First to play were the juniors, who entertained Lowestoft and Yarmouth
in a round robin tag rugby tournament. The Beccles juniors played some
great rugby and were the eventual winners of the tournament.
Next to play were Beccles Ladies. Having set the standard in the local
area for development of women's rugby and integration within the club,
this was the perfect opportunity to display women's rugby of a high
standard. They did not disappoint. Beccles again ran away winners.
The show piece event was that of the men's team. After a disappointing
season last year, having been relegated to London NE 3, Beccles were
keen to get their pre-season campaign off to the best possible start.
The club were delighted to entertain Harringey Rhinos of North London.
Beccles put in a dominant display from the off. Wade was the first on
the score sheet with a fine running angle to score under the posts.
Calver showed a fine piece of individual skill to beat his man and go
over for Beccles' second. Beccles continued to dominate and with that
Wade, Vasey-Lark and Sale all got their names on the scoresheet.
The new 2012/13 captain Ling lead by example with two tries of his own
from tight fringe play.
With game being played in quarters this gave new coach Keith Rix the
chance to give all of the players squad a chance to impress. That they
did, with Giddins in particular putting in a brave B&B Skip Hire man of
the match display. P Wilson and C Hinsley also proved that there is life
in the old dogs yet as they also impressed the management team.
Harringey, to their credit, played with a lot of heart and were rewarded
with 3 tries of their own. But this was not to put a stop to the home
sides performance. Sale and Harmer moved the ball well from 9 and 10
respectively and each were rewarded with run away tries. Starks capped
off a satisfying victory with a score under the posts. A special mention
goes to Mark Mooney who played for the opposition for the entire match
as they were short of players.
